STORYLINE:
An elephant in Pakistan was reunited with her sisters on Tuesday after being separated 15 years ago.
The elephant, named Madhubala, was transported through Karachi on Tuesday to the enclosure of her sisters, Sonia and Malika.
A team from Four Paws, an international animal welfare organization specializing in elephant relocations, came to Karachi to supervise the process of moving.
The elephant will now have more "species-appropriate" spaces including shadowy areas and the possibility of swimming, according to the director of project development at Four Paws and veterinarian Dr. Amir Khalil.
Madhubala was moved from Karachi Zoo to Karachi Safari Park.
Elephants are highly intelligent, highly social animals.
The team involved with moving Madhubala said they hoped she would be more fulfilled.
They anticipated the reunion on Tuesday and the new companionship of her sisters – and wondered whether the elephants would recognize each other after more than a decade apart.
