2. SOUNDBITE (English) Dr. Mandy Cohen, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
"I took the baton at a time where CDC was coming out of a historic pandemic. We all were. And I think there is, I think, a misperception of where the CDC is in this moment. I think there is a bit of folks freezing CDC in a moment in time, as if it’s still April of 2020 or May of 2020. But in the five years since that time, CDC has learned a lot of lessons and put those lessons to work. We’ve taken a lot of action to change the agency."

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Dr. Mandy Cohen, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
"I think we are better positioned to be able to detect and respond to a health threat than we’ve ever been. One, we have a national wastewater infrastructure. It was built for COVID, but we’re using it for things well beyond COVID. We’re using it for mpox. We’re using it for avian flu detection. We have lab capacity that we didn’t have before, and everyone will remember back to 2020 where everyone was like, where are the COVID tests? We now have partnerships with commercial labs to scale up testing very quickly that we didn’t have before."

"There is a difference between campaigning and governing. And I want to go into this in a way where we’re passing the baton. This is important work and an important mission. And let’s respond to actions, not to, you know, campaign things. And so I think the team – my hope is the team stays and stays focused on their mission."
