1. SOUNDBITE (Polish) Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, Polish Defence Minister:
"Today we are obliged to say it clearly: Europe must increase its efforts in helping Ukraine, but first of all it must also increase (efforts for) its own security. Without the increased spending, without this awareness in every European nation of the kind of times that we are living in, everything becomes nothing. Without this awareness of how important security is today, wherever we are."

3. SOUNDBITE (Polish) Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, Polish Defence Minister:
(Answering question about increased spending on defence):
"I believe that the European Union is doing too little today as a whole and if the European Union does not wake up regarding the increase in spending on the armaments industry then we will really fail to use the possibility, the time that we have today, because we have time today, but it may run out soon."

STORYLINE:
Defence ministers from Germany, the UK, Poland, France and Italy gathered in Berlin on Monday for talks aimed at strengthening security and defence in Europe.
Polish Defence Minister, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, said Europe must increase its support for Ukraine, but also bolster its own security.
"Without the increased spending, without this awareness in every European nation of the kind of times that we are living in, everything becomes nothing," he said at a news conference with his defence counterparts.
"This is not only about helping those who are fighting. This is about taking care of one’s self in the nearest future, taking care of one’s country, one’s citizens," he added.
This past week has seen the most significant escalation in hostilities Ukraine has witnessed since Russia’s full-scale invasion and marks a new chapter in the nearly three-year war.
It began with US President Joe Biden reversing a longstanding policy by granting Kyiv permission to deploy American longer-range missiles inside Russian territory and ended with Moscow striking Ukraine with a new experimental ballistic weapon that has alarmed the international community and heightened fears of further escalation.
