3. SOUNDBITE (English) Véronique Cerasoli, spokesperson for LGBTQI non-profit organisation ‘SOS homophobie’:
"Our power is in the way we’re going to get together, fight together. Today, in France, in Paris, it’s important to be together to feel the energy, the strength, to feel the will that we share for a better world. But we can multiply that and magnify that when we hear voices from the US, voices from Europe, from Paris, Rome, Berlin, you name it. So stay together, stay united, stay strong!"
4. Various of leaders of NGOs taking part in demonstration behind banner
5. SOUNDBITE (French) Véronique Cerasoli, spokesperson for LGBTQI non-profit organisation ‘SOS homophobie’:
"Of course we worry – these conservative movements that are very active, very well funded and find themselves now in decision making roles while they hide less and less and openly promote very conservative and ‘anti-everybody’ ideas. It’s a cause for concern and it’s not just a fantasy. It’s not an invention. These concerns have arisen in Hungary, in Poland, in Italy with funds being cut and laws being changed."
6. Feminist activist Maelle Noir and others talking ahead of demonstration
7. SOUNDBITE (English) Maelle Noir, Member of feminist collective ‘Nous Toutes’:
"(The Pelicot trial) This is telling that anybody can be a rapist, right? And there is no typical profile of who the rapist could be and there is also no typical profile of who the victim could be. Unfortunately, anybody can be a perpetrator of violence. It can be our brothers. It can be our fathers. It can be our colleagues. It can be our bosses. I think that’s the big shock for people. It’s to realise that authors of violence are not monsters."
8. Various of demonstrators with purple signs
9. SOUNDBITE (English) Maelle Noir, Member of feminist collective ‘Nous Toutes’:
"The rise of the far right, the rise of anti-gender movements, the rise of conservative movements is extremely concerning. We are worried. We’ve seen it coming for a number of years now. We’ve been trying to alert society and our government to be able to receive some support in tackling such anti-gender politics and white supremacist politics. Of course, women, gender minorities and children are the first targets of supremacists and anti-gender politics so that’s also why we’re in the streets."
10. Various of activist with microphone on back of truck
11. SOUNDBITE (English) Maelle Noir, member of feminist collective ‘Nous Toutes’:
"There is some work to do but I’m really happy to see more male allies today and that’s really good to see. Again, we’re hoping for a global awakening, not only in France but throughout society in the world. Men also have to understand that deconstructing masculinity and including toxic masculinity can also benefit them, for sure."
12. Various of demonstrators playing drums
STORYLINE:
Thousands took to the streets of Paris on Saturday against gender-based violence and in support of women, LGBTQ and minority victims.
Many, in the wake of Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential election, fear a conservative backlash that could impact women’s rights at large.
In France, activists say they have tried to shed light on the risks of seeing the far right nationalist National Rally party come out victorious of elections to come in 2027.
