STORYLINE:
People in Hong Kong were treated to an online screening of the city’s first locally born panda cubs, Saturday, to celebrate their 100-day milestone.

The cubs, one boy and one girl, are not meeting the public just yet but visitors to the Park were delighted to catch a glimpse of them on the big screen.

Some visitors wore panda headbands and brought toy pandas with them.

After watching the pandas Dorothy Chak said they added happiness to society.

"Hong Kong people hope they grow up well and bring us joy," she said.

The cubs have no names yet but are affectionately called “elder sister” and “little brother” in Cantonese on social media.

Ocean Park has started a special Instagram page for their pandas and has been updating videos regularly.

The babies’ mother Ying Ying and her partner Le Le, are the second pair of pandas gifted by China to Hong Kong. They arrived in 2007.

The 19-year-old panda mum has become the world’s oldest first-time panda mother on record.

Meanwhile, the cub’s father Le Le is back to meet the fans.

Le Le’s home in the Park, “Giant Panda Adventure” is reopened after months of closure.

The Ocean Park is offering a variety of panda merchandise in the shops and panda-themed food in cafes.

Hong Kong has six pandas, including the twin cubs, their parents, and two other adult pandas gifted by Beijing, which arrived in Hong Kong in late September.

All of the city’s pandas are staying at Ocean Park.

Hong Kong leader John Lee previously mentioned that he hoped the new giant pandas could meet the public in December and the babies will be ready by February next year.

Giant pandas are only found in China’s southwest and their population is under threat from development.

They are widely considered as the country’s unofficial national mascot and China’s giant panda loan program with overseas zoos has long been known as a tool of Beijing’s soft-power diplomacy.

But caring for pandas in captivity is expensive.

A zoo in Finland agreed with Chinese authorities to return two loaned giant pandas more than eight years ahead of schedule because they were too costly for the facility to maintain amid declining visitors.

Hong Kong’s Ocean Park has been hosting pandas since 1999 when the first pair of pandas arrived in the city as gifts shortly after the former British colony returned to China in 1997.
