And I cried… how will I bring (food) for my brothers, and my mother is pregnant and my father is injured, and no one helped me, and we do not have flour or anything."

9. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Ibrahim Al-Toum, displaced resident:
"We are waiting in the hope that the bakery will open, because people do not have bread, and the reason the bakery is closed is because of the famine that is happening here and there is no food or bread, so people come here and that causes overcrowding."

STORYLINE:
Hundreds of Palestinians in Gaza queued for bread at bakeries Saturday as the United Nations humanitarian office earlier this month warned of a “stark increase” in the number of households experiencing severe hunger in central and southern Gaza.

In Deir al-Balah, local bakeries shut down for five days this week and the price of a bag of bread climbed above $13, as bread and flour vanished from shelves before more supplies arrived.

At least two women were fatally shot on Saturday while waiting in a line for bread in the city, relatives and witnesses told The Associated Press.

Heba Ajam, who was waiting at the bakery and saw the shooting, said that one was shot in the head and another in the neck.

It was unclear who shot them and why.

The lack of food and security has forced some bakeries to close in central and southern Gaza.

Fadi Barbakh said he had slept overnight outside the bakery in the hope of getting bread but had come away empty handed due to the hundreds of people queueing up.

"My children asked me for a loaf of bread and I cannot provide it because of the crowding," he said.
