STORYLINE:
A North Korean speed and figure skating delegation arrived in the Russian Far East city of Vladivostok on Friday for joint training sessions with Russian athletes.

Sixteen skaters from North Korea will be training at an ice arena in Ussuriysk, Primorsky region, for two months.

"I hope for great success from these winter trainings," said Li Yong-Chol, head of the North Korean delegation, at the airport.

The group was not the first to be hosted in the Primorsky region – six other skaters spent a month in Ussuriysk in August and boxers and volleyball players trained in various places earlier this year.

The visits have been another sign of the growing cooperation between the countries.

Russian President Vladimir Putin traveled in June to North Korea, where he met with leader Kim Jong Un.

They signed a “comprehensive strategic partnership treaty” that was the strongest link between Moscow and Pyongyang since the end of the Cold War. Both countries have been targeted with Western sanctions.
