STORYLINE:
A Palestinian mother and father buried their three young children in Khan Younis on Thursday, as officials said the death toll in the Gaza Strip from the Israel-Hamas war had surpassed 44-thousand people.
Seven-year-old Hamza Hasan, his five-year-old brother Abdelaziz, and their four-year-old sister Laila were among nine people killed by an Israeli air strike on Wednesday.
The Civil Defense emergency service said at the time that the strike hit a tent camp sheltering displaced people and that as well as the siblings, another child and a woman were killed.
Hamza, Abdelaziz and Laila had been outside their tent playing and buying goods from a nearby stand when the strike hit.
“My children died on Children’s Day. They left us with memories,” their distraught mother, Areej al-Kadi, told The Associated Press.
Wailing and breaking down in tears, she added that the Israeli military had burned her heart.
Her husband, Mahmoud Hasan, said he had been unable to administer first aid to his children.
And the distraught parents both called on the international community to take action to stop the killing of children.
“The number has reached 44,000, how long will the series of killings of children continue? For how long? So that they can exterminate the rest of the children?" Hasan asked.
Health officials in Gaza on Thursday announced that the death toll from the 13-month-old war between Israel and Hamas had exceeded 44,000.
