"With our unwavering determination to promote peace and protect civilians, we are also calling for an immediate cease-fire in the Middle East, in Gaza as well as in Lebanon, and for the hostages to be released. We are also calling for Israel’s security to be taken into account and for negotiations to be resumed to build a path towards a political solution, a two-state solution. I know how closely the Palestinian question is linked to the history of many Chilean families and you can count on France’s commitment to make every effort to achieve a lasting peace."

STORYLINE:
The leaders of Chile and France met in Santiago on Wednesday to sign an agreement on the creation of a joint centre for artificial intelligence and discuss a number of regional and international issues, including the crisis in the Middle East.
It was the first time that Emmanuel Macron visited the South American country.
At a joint news conference following their talks, Chile President Gabriel Boric said his counterpart’s visit showed the strength of bilateral relations.
Macron in turn commented about the ongoing efforts to secure a cease-fire between Israel and the Hamas militant group in the Gaza Strip, and Israel and the Hezbollah militant group in Lebanon.
