"The president has indeed repeatedly, rather constantly, said that he was ready for contact and negotiations. This is the first thing. The president has also already said that any option for freezing this conflict would not work for us. It is important for us to achieve our goals, which are well known to everyone."

6. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin:
"It is difficult to say how this corresponds to reality, but if we proceed from a general trend demonstrated by the outgoing U.S. administration: they are fully committed to continuing the war in Ukraine and are doing everything possible for this within the time remaining for them. There is yesterday’s decision on missiles, on strikes on our territory and also a possible decision on these mines. By the way, there is a remarkable situation here. You know that neither Russia nor the United States signed this convention (the Ottawa Treaty). We are not signatories, but Ukraine is a signatory to the convention."

STORYLINE:
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Wednesday refused to comment on the U.S. embassy alert in Kyiv, telling reporters during his daily conference call that "it pertains to the course of the special military operation" and "is the prerogative of the defense ministry."
Peskov also dismissed allegations that Moscow would be open to a deal that would freeze the conflict along the existing front line.
He pointed out that President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly expressed his openness for talks, but also emphasized that Moscow wouldn’t accept simply freezing the hostilities.
When asked to comment on the Washington Post’s report alleging that Washington has approved the delivery of anti-personnel mines to Ukraine, Peskov noted that Ukraine, unlike Russia and the U.S., signed an international ban on their use.
