Washington – 19 November 2024
1. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Lisa Murkowski, (R) Alaska:
(Reporter: Do you want to see the ethics report from the House?)
“I think it would be helpful. Everybody’s talking about it. Apparently it was just about done. I think it would be helpful. I’m not part of the decision making process. I’m one vote. I think it would be helpful.”
2. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. John Kennedy, (R) Louisiana:
“We all know what Washington is like. It leaks like a wet paper bag, and I’m not going to feign surprise if…I’m not predicting, it wouldn’t surprise me if the report leaked.”
3. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Dick Durbin, (D) Illinois:
“This is fundamental, this documentation and the report was put together by an absolutely bipartisan panel, equal numbers of Democrats and Republicans and the resignation of Gaetz at the last minute was clearly designed to stop the public release of this information. So, it’s critical. And if this nomination is going forward, we want to make sure that we have access to the right documentation.”
4. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Lisa Murkowski, (R) Alaska:
“I’m getting a lot of incoming phone calls from folks saying, you know, President-elect Trump was given a mandate and so just move his people through. We do need to take up the nominees that he will put in front of us, but we need to do so with a recognition that there is that separation. We are a separate but equal, separate but equal, branch. So, let’s not cede any of our constitutional authority. Let’s take it seriously and let’s give it the time. So, we’re like one week into this, folks. Hold on. It’s going to be more interesting. But I think we have to respect the role that the Senate plays here.”

STORYLINE:
President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for attorney general, Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, was once embroiled in a sex trafficking investigation by the Justice Department he’s been tapped to lead.

The staunch Trump defender and loyalist was also under scrutiny by the House Ethics Committee over allegations including sexual misconduct, although that probe effectively ended when Gaetz resigned from Congress.

US Senators continue to grapple with the nomination and the Senate’s role in approving nominees.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski, (R) Alaska, says she has received phone calls from constituents telling her to make sure Trump’s nominees get through.

“I’m getting a lot of incoming phone calls from folks saying, you know, President-elect Trump was given a mandate and so just move his people through. We do need to take up the nominees that he will put in front of us, but we need to do so with a recognition that there is that separation. We are a separate but equal, separate but equal branch. So, let’s not seed any of our constitutional authority. Let’s take it seriously and let’s give it the time,” Murkowski said.

Sen. Dick Durbin, (D) Illinois, says the House Ethics Committee’s report should be released.

“This is fundamental, this documentation and the report was put together by an absolutely bipartisan panel, equal numbers of Democrats and Republicans and the resignation of Gaetz at the last minute was clearly designed to stop the public of this information. So, it’s critical. And if this nomination is going forward, we want to make sure that we have access to the right documentation,” Durbin said.

And Sen. John Kennedy, (R) Louisiana, says he wouldn’t be surprised if the report is leaked.
