STORYLINE:
The area surrounding a kindergarten in northern Israel remained closed off on Wednesday after a rocket fired from Lebanon struck near the building earlier in the day.
Israeli police said a Hezbollah rocket fell outside the empty kindergarten in the northern city of Acre, causing damage but no injuries.
Ambulance services said that one woman was treated after suffering from an anxiety attack.
The rocket hit as Israeli officials demanded the freedom to strike Lebanon’s Hezbollah as part of any cease-fire deal, raising a potential complication as a top U.S. envoy was in the region attempting to clinch an agreement.
The defense minister and foreign minister said Israel sought to reserve the right to respond to any violations by Hezbollah under an emerging proposal, which would push the militants and Israeli forces out of a buffer zone in southern Lebanon.
Amos Hochstein, the Biden administration’s point man on Israel and Lebanon, has been working to push the sides toward agreement and meeting this week with officials in Lebanon.
