“Today is the World Children’s Day, a day that was created by the United Nations in 1954. And at that time, sure, nobody was thinking that 70 years later, today, we would be seeing a war where 70% of the people being killed are women and children and where the most frequent age group among the people being killed are children below nine years old. That’s the tragic reality."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Josep Borrell, EU foreign policy chief:
“The most frequent age of the people being killed in Gaza are below nine years old. Almost 50 children have been killed every day for one entire year. That’s a children’s war. That’s a terrific situation.”

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Josep Borrell, EU foreign policy chief:
“I want to pay tribute and express my support to the vital role played by UNRWA, the role it’s playing and has to continue playing, defending the rights of the Palestinian people. On that I am representing, sure, the position of European Union, strongly supporting UNRWA and being one of the most important financers giving financial support to this organization.”

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Josep Borrell, EU foreign policy chief:
“There has to be accountability for what’s going on in the Middle East, also the West Bank and in Gaza. But we must look at what is going on in the West Bank in particular, and that’s why I made several proposals to sanction violence settlers, and to send a message that international law has to be respected as much as my proposal to sanction the Hamas leaders exactly for the same reasons. War crimes and crimes against humanity must be investigated and prosecuted, and we have to support International Criminal Court and International Court of Justice.”

12. SOUNDBITE (English) Josep Borrell, EU foreign policy chief:
“Yes, we the European Union we are the biggest supporter of humanitarian help to the people in Gaza and we can be proud of it. But certainly it is not enough. To provide humanitarian support is very much needed, but I have seen the trucks waiting to enter into Gaza, thousands of trucks queuing full of food and not being able to enter in Gaza when on the other side of the wall there are people starving. So in many cases it is not that it is not enough help, the help is there, but they cannot come in and cannot reach people in need, and that becomes a political problem, not just a matter of providing humanitarian support.”
