"This is an action to underscore that there can be no climate justice without human rights, and to raise up the voices of those who cannot be here for countless reasons. Because as we’re seeing around the world the crackdown on environmental and human rights defenders continues. Efforts to silence their voices continue through repression, arrest and violence. And we see this as a growing global phenomenon. And so we are here to underscore the importance of bringing their voices into this space. And of all the states and governments represented here to respect and uphold their obligations under international law, to respect and protect the rights of everyone, including human rights and environmental defenders.”

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Nikki Reisch, Center for International Environmental Law:
"We need to see a decision coming out of here that actually reflects the human rights and legal obligations of the countries gathered here. And that means we need to see finance on the table, we need everyone to be standing up for rights and we need the rich countries to be paying up for their obligations for this crisis that they’re largely responsible for, disproportionately. And that is falling on the doorsteps and taking lives and threatening the existence, really, for many, many countries around the world.”
