STORYLINE:
When Russian tanks rolled into Ukraine in February 2022, the conventional wisdom was that the capital, Kyiv, would soon fall and the rest of the country wouldn’t last long against a much larger enemy.
Instead, it was that narrative that quickly collapsed. The Ukrainian army proved it could slow the advance of Russia’s forces and, if not drive them out completely, then – with enough support from the West – at least forestall defeat.
Tuesday, November 19, will mark a thousand days of war in Ukraine. For Ukrainians living in Chicago, many of whom still have family and friends in Ukraine, the uncertainty of war has been taxing on their communities.
"Nobody know what tomorrow holds for anyone," said Olena Levko-Sendeha, a program director at Selfreliance Association, an organization who has been helping Ukrainians fleeing war settle in the Chicago area.
Levko-Sendeha explains that even for those who have been able to find refuge in the United States, the fear can be ongoing. "They still have their family members, friends that are out there."
