"I grew up watching ‘Columbo’ and I was always very amused with this character who came on the scene in this trench coat, didn’t look like a police officer, would connect with people in a very human sort of odd way, ask very pertinent questions, and not necessarily ever, you know, be intimidating, or threatening or – you were never scared of Columbo, but you should be because of his mind and because of how he could tease you into telling the truth. Karl isn’t Columbo, but they have similarities in that sense because he makes people forget that he’s a cop."

"I contacted my dad because he was always my biggest fan, he was the one who sponsored me when I needed help with studying to be an actor and paying my rent and, you know, he’s certainly the one who pushed me along when I was building excuses not to do this for a living. But here I was, I got this big job and so I told him and when I described the character to him, he recognised him right away. I didn’t even tell him his name. He said, ‘What is that?’ And I told them it’s the Karl Alberg mysteries. And he was so happy."

"You know, my dad passed away in June, which was just after we finished shooting. But all throughout shooting he would he would call just to check in on his son. But he more than wanting to know if I was getting enough sleep or I was eating enough food, he wanted to know how Karl was doing and how the work was going and it’s quite extraordinary that this is, you know, this is what I was working on when he took off. Yeah."

STORYLINE:
The late Donald Sutherland was lined up to appear in a movie based on a book by L.R. Wright 30 years ago – and now his son Rossif has the lead role in a TV show based on the same stories.
He plays Detective Karl Alberg in "Murder In A Small Town" – Fox’s latest mystery series.
The elder Sutherland was hoping to play the lead suspect in a film version of one of the books, which became the inspiration for the first episode of the series, starring James Cromwell in the role.
But it wasn’t until he was cast that Rossif realized the connection to his father.
He stayed in touch with his son during production.
