STORYLINE:
Laos is one of Southeast Asia’s least developed countries. Its capital Vientiane has the air of a moderately-sized provincial town while much of the interior is forested, mountainous and remote.
The city’s best-known landmark is perhaps the Patuxai or Victory Gate, which resembles a Southeast Asian take on Paris’s Arc de Triomphe. It was completed in 1969 and commemorates those who fought for the country’s independence form the French, in the last century.
Laos has been a one-party, communist state since 1975, following the end of a long civil war. It is closely aligned with its neighbours Vietnam and China. Its population of just under eight million people is predominantly Buddhist. The country is known for its many ornate temples, especially in the northern city of Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
As a small, landlocked country with a small population and a recent history of conflict, Laos has historically faced economic problems. A recent assessment by the World Bank said its economic situation “remains difficult, marked by persistently high inflation, currency depreciation, and slow growth” with growth still below pre-COVID-19 levels.
