2. SOUNDBITE (Turkish) Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkish President:
"96% of Gaza’s population, in other words more than two million people, do not currently have access to healthy food and clean water. The Israeli government has converted Gaza into an open air prison, disabling access to humanitarian aid. And they are committing crimes against humanity. This is not something that we claim, many international organizations, such as the United Nations, are confirming that fact."
3. Wide of briefing
4. SOUNDBITE (Turkish) Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkish President:
"About 50-thousand Palestinians have lost their lives. More than 70% of them consist of women and children. In Lebanon, most of the people who have been massacred are innocent civilians. With the support of the Western powers, Israel is actually waging state terrorism and the humanitarian cost of this terrorism is increasing on a daily basis. Regardless of the reasons, we should stop this massacre, this atrocity at all costs. And those who remain silent in the face of such atrocities will not be forgiven by history. And as Turkey, in the West Bank, in Lebanon, in Gaza, the genocide and the atrocities should be stopped once and for all and we are launching an appeal to initiate an immediate and permanent cease-fire and we have launched this appeal once again during this summit in Rio."
5. Wide of briefing
6. SOUNDBITE (Turkish) Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkish President:
"We have no problems with a specific country, with any population, with any faith whatsoever. We have a problem though with massacres and those who are carrying out those massacres. We have problems about civilians being killed, and we have problems with the people who want to shed more blood of innocent civilians. We have problems with those who are trying to turn our region into a place of instability, using their occupation and invasion policies. With this understanding, we decided to be a part of the case filed at the International Court of Justice to ensure that the genocide that has been committed against the people of Gaza for 14 months does not go unpunished.”

STORYLINE:
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday slammed Israel over what he described as "massacres" in Gaza and Lebanon.
"With the support of the Western powers, Israel is actually waging state terrorism and the humanitarian cost of this terrorism is increasing on a daily basis," he said at a briefing alongside the G20 leaders’ meeting in Brazil.
The summit of the Group of 20 leading economies in a joint statement on Monday called for urgent humanitarian assistance and better protection of civilians caught up in conflicts in the Middle East, plus affirmed the Palestinian right to self-determination.
The war in Gaza has killed more than 43,000 Palestinians, according to local health officials, who don’t distinguish between civilians and combatants when counting the dead.
More than 3,500 people also have been killed in Lebanon due to Israel’s offensive against Hezbollah, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry.
The document didn’t mention the suffering of Israel, which is not a G20 member, nor the 100 or so Israeli hostages still held by Hamas in Gaza.
