STORYLINE:
Demonstrators gathered in Rio de Janeiro on Monday to show solidarity with the Palestinian people as world leaders held the G20 summit.
Holding banners and Palestinian flags, they called for a cease-fire and demanded the Brazilian government immediately break off relations with the state of Israel.
“We ask for an immediate cease-fire to comply with the decisions of the international court that has already condemned Israel for the first infanticide in history,” said Keliana Neves Gonçalves, a member of the Palestinian People’s Solidarity Committee in Rio de Janeiro.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva welcomed foreign leaders to Rio de Janeiro’s modern art museum Monday morning and delivered an opening address that focused on fighting food insecurity.
Heightened global tensions and uncertainty about an incoming Trump administration ahead of the summit already had tempered expectations for a strongly worded statement addressing the conflicts in the Middle East and between Russia and Ukraine.
Further dimming prospects, G20 officials told The Associated Press that Argentina’s negotiators have started challenging some of the draft language.
That has left experts anticipating a final document focused on social issues like the eradication of hunger — one of Brazil’s priorities — even if it still aims to include at least a mention of the ongoing wars.
