STORYLINE:
Ultra-Orthodox Jewish men protested in the central Israeli city of Bnei Brak on Sunday against their draft into the Israeli army.

The government said 7,000 conscription notices will be sent out from Sunday.

“We are a people of Jews, not Israelis, and we do not intend to enlist in the army in any way,” said one of the protesters.

In June, Israel’s Supreme Court unanimously ordered the government to begin drafting ultra-Orthodox Jewish men into the army.

Roughly 1.3 million ultra-Orthodox Jews make up about 13% of Israel’s population, and oppose enlistment because they believe studying full time in religious seminaries is their most important duty.

The war between Israel and Hamas began after Palestinian militants stormed into Israel on Oct. 7. last year, killing about 1,200 people — mostly civilians — and abducting around 250 others. Around 100 hostages remain in Gaza, about a third believed to be dead.

The Health Ministry in Gaza says around 43,800 Palestinians have been killed in the war. The ministry does not distinguish between civilians and combatants but has said women and children make up more than half the fatalities.
