"The archaeological park has recently seen a great increase in inflows, which makes us happy and proud, but it can also create difficulties, even if not throughout the year. For example, this is a fairly quiet period, so we have also chosen this moment to experiment with this novelty, but during spring, summer and even autumn, we sometimes reach limits where a risk could be created both for the safety of people and for the protection of heritage. Therefore, together with the prefecture, the Ministry and the fire department, we decided to adopt this measure on an experimental and temporary basis."

"We have also seen that while there is great affluence in Pompeii, the other sites in the area that are wonderful and are part of the history of Pompeii – the farms, the villas, Boscoreale, Torre Annunziata, Castellammare di Stabia and so on – have far fewer visitors than they deserve. So we also want to encourage people to come and visit the whole area, to discover its treasures."

"For me, it’s a good thing, even for us as tourists. Perhaps everything has more quality if there are fewer people. I think you can take more time to see things. For the call sign, I think it’s a good thing, because, in the end, there’s more control, there’s more security. That is my opinion."

STORYLINE:
The Pompeii archaeological park has launched a new system to limit visitor numbers to 20,000 a day.

The move sees the introduction of personalized tickets in a bid to cope with over tourism and protect the world heritage site.

Last summer more than 4 million people wandered through the ancient city of Pompeii to see the ruins and casts of ancient Romans buried and frozen in time almost 2,000 years ago by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

At the gates today there’s an endless flow of tourists eager to see the famous ruins.

The park’s director, Gabriel Zuchtriegel, said on Friday that visitors to the site now exceed an average of 15,000 to 20,000 every day, so a new daily cap has been introduced to prevent the numbers from surging further.

"The archaeological park has recently seen a great increase in inflows which makes us happy and proud, but it can also create difficulties,” said Zuchtriegel at the park’s entrance where the new system is being implemented.

“We sometimes reach limits where a risk could be created both for the safety of people and for the protection of heritage.”

Tickets now include the full names of visitors.

A maximum of 20,000 will be released each day, with different time slots during the peak summer season.

The park’s management is also trying to encourage more tourists to visit other ancient sites connected to Pompeii by a free shuttle bus.

Tourists entering the site on Friday said they approved of the new system.
