STORYLINE:
Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva received on Saturday the final document of the first G20 social summit in Rio de Janeiro.
The document brought together recommendations from representatives of civil society from the world’s 19 largest economies.
South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Ronald Lamola represented his country, the next G20 host, as President Cyril Ramaphosa could not attend the event.
“The G20 has to happen every single day, on our day-to-day. Because 733 million people go to sleep every night without food. Last year, the world spent 2.4 trillion dollars in weapons and almost didn’t spend anything on food for people who needed to have breakfast, lunch, and dinner,” said the Brazilian president.
The final declaration of the Social G20, read out by representatives of civil society hours earlier, defended the ‘progressive taxation of the super-rich’ and underlined that democracy ‘is at risk when extreme right-wing forces promote disinformation’ and called for a reform of the UN Security Council, with greater participation by countries from the Global South.
