“We wanted to create a fun installation that signifies the big main atrium here that is visible from every level. And to really respect the history and the core identity of the brand, which is the trunk. And we have four different materials and different configurations of the tower that is very unusual in its the way it’s stacked and very slender and tall, almost like a New York skyscraper, which is highly structural and sculptural.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Shohei Shigematsu, Architect – on the origin of the trunks:
“Well, some of them are ordered, but some of them are original. All these parts, you know, there are many parts to put for – in one trunk. And the parts are original. And some of the you know, how do you say it…. In the end, it’s all ordered, but it’s also the parts are just original, so it’s, it’s all made in France.”

13. SOUNDBITE (English) Shohei Shigematsu, Architect – on the elevator installations on each floor:
“We wanted to also acknowledge their diversity of the bags they have and the bags in different sizes. So the mirrored bags are stacked almost again and more as a module to act as a kind of wallpaper, but as a three dimensional wallpaper that reflects all these collaboration patterns and artwork onto it. So it has some kind of a dynamic effect, although simultaneously acknowledging the past collaborations and great artwork and great graphics.”

17. SOUNDBITE (English) Shohei Shigematsu, Architect – on working with the brand:
“So, I think we’ve been collaborating with Louis Vuitton already. We’ve done an exhibition in Bangkok and it’s continuing, so this is very unique and very, very site specific. You know, we’re really trying to acknowledge this incredible hype and also the core identity of the brand. So it can only happen here. But we’re also doing other installations using the trunk as a module.”

21. SOUNDBITE (English) Shohei Shigematsu, Architect – on the number of trunks:
“In total, there are 108 trunks, and that’s a lot. But in order to occupy this incredibly tall atrium with four towers, we needed that much. But it’s always a single module, always the same size that creates a single sculpture. So, it’s really acting like a kind of module.”

STORYLINE:
While the New York flagship store is going over extensive modifications, Louis Vuitton moved across the street into a massive five-story space.
And in the atrium are four large sculptural towers made up of Louis Vuitton trunks.
Architect Shohei Shigematsu described his intention for the space.
“We wanted to create a fun installation that signifies the big main atrium here that is visible from every level. And to really respect the history and the core identity of the brand, which is the trunk,” Shigematsu said.
He calls the 16-meter-tall artwork perfect for the city.
The installation uses 108 trunks and is divided into four tower, each using different materials in metal and canvas.
