STORYLINE:
Hundreds of mourners on Friday attended the funeral of Israeli sergeant Ivri Dickshtein in Jerusalem who was killed in southern Lebanon.

Seven Israeli soldiers were killed in recent days fighting with Hezbollah militants, bringing the number of soldiers killed since the start of the war to 749, the army said in a statement.

Israel Foreign Minister Gidon Saar said during the funeral that “the plan to destroy Israel went wrong” by the sacrifices of soldiers.

"The destruction did not happen as they (enemies) believed, in the face of a rare strength and a great victorious spirit,” Saar also said.

Israel says it is trying to push the militants away from the border and put an end to more than a year of Hezbollah fire into northern Israel.

Some 1.2 million people have been displaced by the conflict in Lebanon, according to government estimates. Israeli officials estimate that about 60 thousand have been displaced in northern Israel.

Hezbollah began firing into Israel on October 8, 2023, in solidarity with the Hamas militant group in the Gaza Strip.

Since the conflict erupted, more than 3,000 people have been killed and some 13,600 wounded in Lebanon, the Health Ministry reported.

The Israel-Hamas war began after Palestinian militants stormed into Israel on October 7, 2023, killing some 1,200 people — mostly civilians — and abducting 250 others.

Israel’s military response in Gaza has killed more than 43,000 people, Palestinian health officials say. They do not distinguish between civilians and combatants but say more than half of those killed were women and children.
