STORYLINE:
Two small groups of protesters took to the streets of Lima on Thursday as world leaders gathered in Peru for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum.

One group of protesters took to the streets near the APEC summit building, as police with anti-riot gear prevented them from getting closer to the venue.

Some Indigenous protesters held hand-written placards reading “APEC out.”

Another small group gathered in downtown Lima where some were protesting against President Dina Boluarte.

They said they were seeking justice for people killed or arrested during protests that followed the ousting of former president Pedro Castillo in December 2022.

“I’m here to demand justice for everyone murdered, for all the family members murdered nationally, more than 50 murdered, more than 1,500 injured," said Mariela Cayo, wife of Manuel Quilla.

In 2022, former President Castillo was ousted by Congress and arrested on a charge of rebellion after he sought to dissolve the legislative body and take unilateral control of the government, triggering a grave constitutional crisis.

Castillo’s supporters then took to the streets for several months and some of those protests turned violent.
