"The result of the American presidential election created a new reality. And with the establishment of the sovereign Patriot group, a new reality was created in Europe. Everyone sees that new forces will be successful, those that until now have been pushed back. The future is for the sovereign, independent, proud, and success-hungry nations. This is the new reality. In Europe, everyone must adapt their own destiny and their own policies to this.”

"Europe must understand that it is not Serbia that needs the European Union, but that the European Union needs Serbia. Europe has problems with the dynamics of growth. And we can only hope for new impetus, new dynamics, and new energy from new members. The best candidate for these is Serbia.”

STORYLINE:
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said Thursday that Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential election had "created a new reality" to which Europe must adapt.

"The future is for the sovereign, independent, proud, and success-hungry nations," Orbán said in Budapest after meeting Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.

"This is the new reality. In Europe, everyone must adapt their own destiny and their own policies to this," he added.

Hungary’s fiery, right-wing leader hopes that Trump’s victory will help his own battle against immigration and multiculturalism and restore traditional family values.

Orbán is Russian President Vladimir Putin’s closest partner within the European Union and Europe’s longest-serving leader.

He currently holds the rotating presidency of the EU, which often is the bloc’s global bullhorn and which Orbán has used in ways that highlight internal divisions.

Orban addressed the issue of EU expansion on Thursday.

Like other Western Balkan countries that are seeking European Union membership, Serbia is frustrated by the slow pace of the process.

"Europe must understand that it is not Serbia that needs the European Union, but that the European Union needs Serbia," he said.

"Europe has problems with the dynamics of growth. And we can only hope for new impetus, new dynamics, and new energy from new members. The best candidate for these is Serbia,” he added.
