”Yes, I think that’s one of the first gaps in the whole system that we need to address. And it is quite alarming that at the 29th Conference of Parties meeting, we are still talking in bumper stickers, yet not able to get past them, that we need a transformative solution. We need strong delivery. Well, you are well past your tipping points and you are past the 1.5°C for industrial levels. And I mean projections are 3.1°C by close of the decade rather 2050. My point is that catastrophic for all the vulnerable countries that are already in an accelerated climate fragility situation. So what, warming is not even peaking. Now, fossil fuels and emissions are not peaking. And that’s also of concern because, again, 29 years later, we are talking about talking and we are talking about how to get to a point where we can reduce emissions and reduce warming .”

“I mean, there are very few words to describe how people are making resilience happen in their own daily lives because it’s really about people at the end of the day. We have communities and people still at the edge of fragility. But at the area with which was inundated mostly, which is in my province of Sindh, in near the coastal areas there, the government, the provincial government has launched a huge resilience project with with housing for 2.1 million people. It’s taking its time, but we are having to rebuild infrastructure and resilient infrastructure is $4 to $1 normal infrastructure. So it’s really about the financing gap. We would scale it up if there was more money available. Right now, we’re spending our own resources. And again, loans from the World Bank. This is what Pakistan is asking for. The prime minister repeatedly said we don’t want more debt to burden us. As it is, the economy faces a shock every time there’s a calamity. So the exhaustion of shock is too much to absorb on our own.”

“Fossil fuels and emissions are not peaking,” said Sherry Rehman, chair of the climate and environment committee in Pakistan’s senate at the COP29 in Azerbaijan.
After 29 years of climate talks, Rehman said countries are “still talking in bumper stickers."
”We need a transformative solution. We need strong delivery,” Rehman said.
Rehman also referenced a housing project being launched in the country.
“The provincial government has launched a huge resilience project with housing for 2.1 million people. It’s taking its time, but we are having to rebuild infrastructure and resilient infrastructure is $4 to $1 normal infrastructure. So it’s really about the financing gap. We would scale it up if there was more money available,” said Rehman.
