In November 1987 a horror unfolded in Manhattan’s tony West Village as attorney Joel Steinberg came home under the influence of crack cocaine and brutally beat the six-year-old he called his daughter. He then left to meet a friend for dinner, and we returned home resumed smoking crack – ignoring the condition of the injured girl he and his domestic partner called Lisa. The next morning she was dead. The case shocked New York City and the country.
