STORYLINE:
Veterans, officials and locals attended an Armistice Day ceremony on Monday in Belgium to mark the end of World War I and the millions killed, with conflict once again present on the European continent.

Veterans as well as the American and Irish ambassadors to Belgium laid wreaths under Ypres’ Menin Gate, where some 55,000 names of soldiers whose remains were never found are engraved.

““I come here every year to commemorate all that happened 100 years ago, for all the young people who sacrificed their lives for us and this is something that I am trying to pass on to my children," said parade watcher Fouron Lieve.

Debby Eisen, a Canadian honorary Naval Captain and a veteran of 36 years she was impressed by how Belgium had honoured veterans

World War I pitted the armies of France, the globe-spanning British empire, Russia and the United States against a German-led coalition that included the Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman empires.
