3. SOUNDBITE (English) Asad Rehman, Executive director of War on Want:
"COP29 opens, as we know the world hurtles towards three degrees of warming and at the same time, we see a live televised genocide taking place in Palestine. We all understand that there can be no climate justice without human rights. If we can’t stop the genocide in Palestine, we will not be able to stop the genocide that is coming in terms of climate violence. When governments come here and say that they have not got any climate finance to help developing countries but find money for bombs and weapons, when the very rule of international law and the rules-based system is being burnt down. The very system we rely on to address the climate crisis, it forces all people of conscience to speak up. And that’s what we’re doing today."

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Lise Masson, activist from Friends of the Earth International:
"So on the first day of COP29, our main message is one of solidarity, of solidarity with Palestine and one of justice and accountability for the Global North. So, it’s both asking the Global North to deliver the climate finance that is needed at this COP and to stop funding a genocide in Gaza."
6. Mid of protest
STORYLINE:
Dozens of activists protested inside the COP29 venue in Baku, Azerbaijan on Monday, holding banners calling for climate justice and for nations to “stop fueling genocide.”
With many of them wearing Palestinian keffiyehs, protesters said there can be no climate justice without human rights.
"We see a live televised genocide taking place in Palestine. We all understand that there can be no climate justice without human rights," said Asad Rehman, Executive director of War on Want.
The activists held a quiet protest calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. They clutched banners reading: "Stop fueling genocide" and "Ceasefire now! End the occupation!"
Soaring rhetoric, urgent pleas and pledges of cooperation contrasted with a backdrop of seismic political changes, global wars and economic hardships as United Nations annual climate talks began Monday and got right to the hard part: money.
