"For people who believe that you need a decider and you need to be executing things, and you have to be in charge, this is a disaster. There’s no one who’s going to be in charge. There’s no one who could enforce her or his will. For those people who believe that Japan is more of a consensus-based — everyone, let’s all get along, we have some things that we need to deal with, we can agree on most almost everything, let’s do those things first — kind of country, this is actually going to be a very interesting experiment in what is essentially a national unity government."

"Because of the way that the habits of the Diet require that, in this case, very important committees will be in the hands of members of the opposition. Most importantly, there is going to be a CDPJ (Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan) head of the budget committee where everything is discussed, most importantly, the budget of the country. That so much of the government machinery will be in the hands of the opposition, and anything getting passed will have to not just reflect their views, but also have to get past their chairman, is going to be a fantastic… And again, it’s never been done. There was a brief minority government with (Tsutomu) Hata which only lasted less than 70 days. This is going to be a fantastic experiment to see, if indeed, a national unity government can get Japan through until the next election."

"Ishiba starts out with a much more autarkic, much more proud Japan, in terms of its relationship with the United States. That’s what he came in with his with. That’s what he’s going to be playing with. And he knows he has the Japanese public behind him. So I am suspecting that we’re going to see some real resistance and Ishiba also knows that when (Shinzo) Abe abdicated himself and bent his knee to (Donald) Trump, it didn’t do Japan any good at all. It got hit with tariffs on its steel products. It got hit with tariffs on everything, and he belittled Japan. This person cannot be bought through showing him great, tremendous amount of love and affection. He is just simply above everyone and Ishiba knows it. And he saw that happen to Abe and criticised it and said, you know, this is not getting anything for Japan. And I can’t imagine that he’s going to do a 180 degree change. I think he’s going to ally with the Europeans and just hang on by his fingernails, if necessary, and say, ‘No.’"
