"We need climate action, not climate neglect and this requires money. That’s the centrepiece of COP29. Climate finance is at the heart of the Paris Agreement and at COP29 the work must go on. It cannot and must not hinge on any one country. A robust and ambitious new finance goal must be agreed upon, and (Donald) Trump’s reelection can never be an excuse for other nations to scale back the ambition needed.”

"There’s no reason for China, as well as other countries, to lower the ambition level because of the political change happening in the White House. Meanwhile, we need to admit there is a climate leadership vacuum left by this US election result. I can see China, together with other political stakeholders, are in a position to fill in that leadership gap.”

"We’ve been there where the U.S. is about to be. And I think one thing that was actually key for us to overcome those really bad four years with a climate denier, you know as a president, was civil society, organized civil society and the movements and the social movements and the indigenous communities and the local communities. I think in the end it has strengthened our ability to work together and to push back.”

STORYLINE:
Greenpeace officials stressed on Monday that the reelection of Donald Trump to the White House could not be used as an "excuse" for nations to scale back on commitments need to deal with climate change.

"We need climate action, not climate neglect and this requires money. That’s the centrepiece of COP29," said Yeb Sano, executive director for Greenpeace in Southeast Asia.

"A robust and ambitious new finance goal must be agreed upon, and Trump’s reelection can never be an excuse for other nations to scale back the ambition needed.”

Global efforts to fight climate change stumbled but survived the last time Trump, who disputes climate change and its impact, was elected president.

He withdrew the United States from an international climate agreement and experts worry that a second Trump term will be more damaging.

"There’s no reason for China, as well as other countries, to lower the ambition level because of the political change happening in the White House," Yuan Ying, China representative for Greenpeace East Asia stressed.

"We need to admit there is a climate leadership vacuum left by this US election result. I can see China, together with other political stakeholders, are in a position to fill in that leadership gap.”
