STORYLINE:
Spanish firefighters, soldiers and military emergency units continued to search flooded fields until dark on Friday looking for victims of the flash flooding which devastated communities in the east of the country more than a week ago.

Rescue teams searched rural fields between the areas of Sedaví and Catarroja, often knee deep in water.

Officers flew drones over the search zone.

Spain’s catastrophic floods have left behind staggering devastation and despair.

The historic floods have caused at least 219 deaths, 211 of them in the Valencia region alone.

Another seven people died in neighbouring Castilla La Mancha and one more in southern Andalusia.

Ninety-three people have been officially declared missing, but authorities admit that the real number could be higher.

Another 54 bodies remain unidentified. In total, 36,605 people have been rescued, according to authorities.

Some 17,000 troops and police officers have been deployed, and thousands of ordinary citizens are volunteering to help clean layer after layer of mud and debris.
