"Now when it comes to UNFPA our focus areas are reproductive health. We are focusing on the close to 7,000 women that have arrived in Syria who are pregnant. And we also know that in the next month alone, almost 800 births will happen here in Syria."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Muriel Mafico, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) representative in Syria:
"And since the end of September, with the escalation of hostilities in Lebanon, we have witnessed nearly half a million people who have crossed from Lebanon into Syria. The majority of the people who have arrived in Syria are women and children. And so, this is typical in many of the humanitarian situations across the globe. Once again it is women and children who are paying a heavy price."

STORYLINE:
Israel’s escalated aerial bombardment of Lebanon has driven over half a million people to cross the border into Syria, overwhelming already strained resources and putting thousands of pregnant women in urgent need of assistance.
“The majority of the people who arrived in Syria are women and children,” said Muriel Mafico, the representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Syria. “Once again, it is women and children who are paying a heavy price.”
Among the arrivals, an estimated 7,000 are pregnant, with about 800 expected to give birth within the next month, Mafico told The Associated Press.
“We are providing them with instant support here at the border.”
The Lebanese General Security recorded 361,300 Syrians and 177,864 Lebanese crossing into Syria between Sept. 23 and Nov. 1, according to a report by Lebanon’s crisis response unit.
