“First, (Donald) Trump is going to be very tough on China in the future. This is not a bold prediction. This is what everyone is predicting. The reason is very simple. When Trump was elected in 2016, he did have expectations for US-China relations, including between 2016 to 2018, with high-ranking personalities’ exchanges between the two countries, personal interactions with Xi Jinping and the first stage discussions on trade negotiations, these were all the things Trump was after. But I think that Trump could not see the fruits of these attempts. The numbers spoke clearly. China was not able to fulfill its commitments on agricultural and other purchases. It was unable to curb down the export of fentanyl. It just could not improve the core issues between the U.S. and itself (China).”

5. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin), Vincent Chao, Taipei City Councilor and former Political Section Chief at the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) in Washington:
“Trump is going to extend his Taiwan-friendly approach. Why am I saying this? Because we do see that part of Trump’s narrative is raising discussions within Taiwan. But speaking of Trump, we have to ‘look what he does, now what he says’. You have to look at what he does, not what he is saying. His actions during his first tenure, we have seen high-ranking exchanges, cabinet members visiting Taiwan, start of economical talks, granting military sales, all these are proof that US-Taiwan relations have great potentials for development.”

7. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin), George Yin, National Cheng Chi University professor:
“Compared to China, the US might is comparatively declining. I am not saying that the US is not a superpower, it is just that China is rising. Then via this power competition aspect, the US-China competition is not about democratic values. It will be all about the competition of power. In order to win the competition, it will be all after winning Taiwan. Therefore, it will decrease support to Ukraine and bring the support to Taiwan. But on the other hand, they are also calculating about Taiwan. If Taiwan is very valuable to them, they will support Taiwan even more. But if Taiwan’s value is not so interesting after calculation, they will adjust their support on Taiwan.”
