“It is the second time that we have to live through all that has happened: the weather and the problems with the energy grid of the country. The hotel offered, in solidarity, the power from their power plants to the neighbors so that people could charge their mobile phones and their lamps. It is a great help to the neighborhood.”

STORYLINE:
Cuba was left reeling Thursday after a fierce Category 3 hurricane ripped across the island and knocked out the country’s power grid.

The power went out across the island on Wednesday afternoon, and 24 hours later, it still hasn’t been restored in most provinces, including the capital Havana.

All day, some residents formed long lines outside the hotels with power from generators, desperate to charge their mobile phones, computers, and other battery-operated appliances.

In October, the island was hit by a one-two punch. First, Cuba was roiled by days-long blackouts, a product of its energy crisis.

Shortly after, it was slapped by another powerful hurricane that killed at least six people in the eastern part of the island.

Rafael is the 17th named storm of the season.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted the 2024 hurricane season would be well above average, with between 17 and 25 named storms.

The forecast called for as many as 13 hurricanes and four major hurricanes.
