“President Xi Jinping has congratulated U.S. president-elect (Donald) Trump. President Xi Jinping pointed out that history has shown that both sides of China and the U.S. gain from cooperation and lose from confrontation. A stable, sound and sustainable relationship serves the interests of both countries and meets the expectations of the international community. It’s hoped that both sides can follow the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation, strengthen dialogue and communication, properly manage and control differences, expand mutually beneficial cooperation to find the right way for China and the U.S. to get along with each other in the new era for the benefit of the two countries and the world.”

5. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Mao Ning, Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson:
“As for your first question, first of all we don’t answer hypothetical questions. But in principle, I would like to reiterate that there will be no winners in a trade war, and it does not benefit the world. As for the Taiwan issue, it is the most important and most sensitive issue in China-U.S. relations. China resolutely opposes any form of official exchange between the U.S. and Taiwan, and this position has been consistent and clear. The U.S. government should abide by the ‘One China’ principle, handle issues involving Taiwan with caution to avoid seriously harming the China-U.S. relations and the peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.”

STORYLINE:
China’s leader Xi Jinping has called for the U.S. and China to manage their differences and get along in a new era in a congratulatory message to President-elect Donald Trump, according to China’s Foreign Ministry.

“President Xi Jinping pointed out that history has shown that both sides of China and the U.S. gain from cooperation and lose from confrontation," said Mao Ning, a spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign affairs, at a daily press briefing on Thursday.

"A stable, sound and sustainable relationship serves the interests of both countries and meets the expectations of the international community," she added.

One of Trump’s campaign promises is to slap blanket 60% tariffs on all Chinese exports to the U.S. When asked about the potential tariffs hike, Mao said a trade war would benefit no one.

“As for your first question, first of all we don’t answer hypothetical questions. But in principle, I would like to reiterate that there will be no winners in a trade war and it does not benefit the world,” she said.

Apart from trade and tech, China and the U.S. are also at odds over Taiwan, a self-governing island which China claims as its own territory. Taiwan split from the mainland in 1949 during a civil war when the defeated nationalist government fled to the island.

“China resolutely opposes any form of official exchange between the U.S. and Taiwan, and this position has been consistent and clear," said Mao.
