STORYLINE:
China on Thursday expressed support for Myanmar’s “political reconciliation” as Myanmar’s junta leader Min Aung Hlaing visits the country for several regional meetings.
Myanmar’s Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing was greeted by China’s Premier Li Qiang on the sidelines of a summit for economic cooperation between the Mekong countries earlier in the day in Kunming, the capital city of southern Yunnan province bordering Myanmar.
At a daily news briefing in Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning echoed Premier Li, reaffirming China’s support for Myanmar’s sovereignty and early resumption of the “political transition process.”
China’s government has maintained good working relations with Myanmar’s ruling military, which is shunned and sanctioned by many Western nations for its takeover and major human rights violations.
Asked about German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s decision to fire Finance Minister Christian Lindner, Mao said it was Germany’s “internal affair” and thus had “no comment.”
The move signals the collapse of the ruling three-party coalition that relied on Lindner’s pro-business party.
Separately, Mao stressed that China’s position on developing ties with the U.S. was “consistent” when commenting on the possibility and merits of Tesla CEO Elon Musk being a cabinet member in the Trump administration.
China always handled ties with the U.S. under the “principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation” and was “committed to promoting the healthy, stable, and sustainable development of China-US relations,” said Mao.
Tesla stands to make significant gains under a Trump administration with the threat of diminished subsidies for alternative energy and electric vehicles doing the most harm to smaller competitors.
Trump’s plans for extensive tariffs on Chinese imports make it less likely that Chinese EVs will be sold in bulk in the U.S. anytime soon.
