Qatar has paused its mediation efforts for a Gaza cease-fire and hostage release, calling for more commitment from the militant group Hamas and Israel, the foreign ministry announced on Saturday. The Gulf state, which has hosted Hamas’s political leaders since 2012 with US support, has been engaged in prolonged diplomacy to end the conflict that began with Hamas’s terror attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. Talks, also involving Cairo and Washington, have stalled repeatedly since a brief truce in November 2023, with each side blaming the other for the deadlock.
