4. SOUNDBITE (German) Olaf Scholz, German Chancellor:
"The goal of the Atlantic Alliance is clear: to be so strong that no one will even think of attacking us. NATO is and remains the basis for our common security on both sides of the Atlantic. Even 75 years after it was founded, it is an expression of transatlantic cooperation and our shared values of freedom, democracy and the rule of law."

7. SOUNDBITE (German) Olaf Scholz, German Chancellor:
"The alliance is strong and will remain so. Dear Mark, we are both convinced that we must continue to strengthen the European pillar of NATO. Europe will make significant investments in the coming years to increase our defense spending and strengthen our defense capabilities. It is about being able to counter any threat to security in Europe."

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Mark Rutte, NATO Secretary-General:
"Germany now invests, as you said, 2% of its GDP in defence for the first time in three decades. This is important for Germany and for NATO. All NATO allies must invest more and I trust that Germany will continue to step up."

11. SOUNDBITE (English) Mark Rutte, NATO Secretary-General:
"And on the American elections: Whoever wins those elections, we will work with Kamala Harris, we will work with Donald Trump and make sure that the alliance stays united. I have no doubt, because it is in our interest, it is our interest here, but also in the United States, because they are not in this to not repeat the mistake after the First World War of withdrawing from Europe. No, they are in this because they know that if Putin would be successful in Ukraine, that at that moment an emboldened Russia is on our eastern flank and will present a direct threat to NATO territory. And that is (inaudible) and an integral part of the alliance."

14. SOUNDBITE (German) Olaf Scholz, German Chancellor:
(asked about domestic politics, current discussions within coalition)
"The government will do its job. I am the Chancellor. It’s about overcoming the challenges we face in serious times. It’s about the economy and jobs. It’s about pragmatism and not ideology. And that is what is currently being negotiated. Coalition governments are not only known in Germany and are sometimes somewhat challenging. But the tasks have been set and the government has been elected and will complete its tasks."

STORYLINE:
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte on Monday pledged to work with the future president of the United States regardless of who wins the upcoming election during a joint press conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin.

Rutte said it was in the US’s best interests to work with NATO and ensure the security alliance remains strong on both sides of the Atlantic.

But Donald Trump’s scepticism during his last term of office about low defense spending among European allies and Canada undermined the trust of many member countries.

Since taking over as secretary-general, Rutte has sought to shore up Western support for war-ravaged Ukraine and encourage member states to boost defense spending.
