"This contradicts principles of the U.N. charter. It violates Israel’s obligations under international law and sets a dangerous precedent. Allowing Isarel to proceed with its laws and plans against UNRWA would jeopardize international refugee protection and embolden further erosion of established rights."

13. SOUNDBITE (English) Varsen Shahin, senior official in the Palestinian Foreign Ministry:
"As Palestinians we reject the unlawful Knesset legislations regarding UNRWA. We condemn the Israeli Knesset’s decision on approving to pass the two laws that prohibit UNRWA from operating in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem. We are deeply concerned by this unlawful decision which revokes the privileges and immunities of URNWA and terminates its operations in the occupied state of Palestine. We consider these laws as illegal, null and void."

STORYLINE:
A Palestinian official condemned Monday Israel’s decision to terminate the agreement facilitating the work of the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees, the main aid provider in Gaza.

"We are deeply concerned by this unlawful decision which revokes the privileges and immunity of UNRWA and terminates its operations in the occupied state of Palestine,” said Varsen Shahin, a senior official in the Palestinian Foreign Ministry.

The decision appeared to be a step to implement legislation passed last month that would sever ties with the agency and prevent it from operating in Israel.

Israel says the agency, known as UNRWA, has been infiltrated by Hamas. UNRWA denies the allegations and says it takes measures to ensure its neutrality.

"We consider these laws illegal, null and void,” Shahin added.

Aid groups have warned that the legislation could severely hamper UNRWA’s work, creating further obstacles to addressing a severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
