Today marks the twentieth anniversary of Operation Phantom Fury, also known as the Second Battle of Fallujah, which took place on November 7, 2004.
Fallujah had authority over the movement of troops and supplies in the area because of its location between Baghdad and Ramadi, Iraq, but also made it a safe haven for rebels. The coalition was under the command of the 1st Marine Division and the battle is considered the most intense combat in Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and the deadliest American engagement since Hue City in the Vietnam War.
