The governing coalition in Germany has collapsed and Chancellor Olaf Scholz has called for a confidence-vote in mid-January. But conservative opposition leader Friedrich Merz wants to see that vote held immediately.
A confidence vote is likely to trigger new parliamentary elections.
Scholz, of the Social Democratic party, has dismissed his finance minister, Christian Lindner, who leads the business-friendly Free Democrats. Tensions in their three-party coalition government with the Greens has been growing for some time, with economic policy causing the biggest clashes.
