"I have lived there all my life, I am 62 years-old. I have been there all my life, all my memories are there, my parents lived there, they all lived there, and now in one night it is all gone. If we had left it five more minutes – we went to our neighbours house, who I have to thank – who live in front and if we hadn’t done so five minutes earlier we would not be here in this world."

7. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Juan Vicente Perez, Chiva resident who lost his house in flooding:
"There was no warning at all, I think that this caught everyone by surprise. This, this – it’s true, there should have been some warning – but in these circumstances I don’t think anyone could have done anything. It was something out of the ordinary, something we have never seen. At my age, in the age of my parents, nothing like this (has been seen), during the flood of 1957, before I was born, my parents said nothing happened here, this road was not affected, so well, this has been a catastrophe."

STORYLINE:
Residents on Friday assessed the damage caused to their town after flooding devastated Spain’s Valencia region.
Two days after the deluge started on Tuesday, authorities say they have recovered 158 bodies and continue to search for an unknown number of missing people.
The damage recalled the aftermath of a tsunami, with survivors left to pick up the pieces as they mourn their loved ones.
In the badly-hit town of Chiva, where it rained more in eight hours than it had in the preceding 20 months, local resident, Juan Vicente Perez, wept as he pointed out the remains of his partially collapsed house.
"I have been there all my life, all my memories are there, my parents lived there, they all lived there, and now in one night it is all gone," he said,
He said he and his wife fled to a neighbour’s house just minutes before his own home was hit by the floods.
He said there was no warning from the authorities but believed a everyone was taken by surprise by the ferocity of the flash floods that swept away everything in their path.
Another local resident said people were starting to do what they could to clean up the town.
