STORYLINE:
New Yorkers put on their wackiest costumes and made their way to the 51st annual Village Halloween Parade, Thursday night.

Marching bands could be heard echoing throughout the city as they made their way down the boulevards, while bystanders of all ages stuck out their candy bags to collect some sweet treats.

Native New Yorker Tristen Maldonado says the parade perfectly describes the city.

"This is like a perfect time to celebrate my favorite holiday and the vibes are great," said Maldonado. "So, seeing people dress up as completely different things really brings the New York energy."

Amid all of the fun, those walking in the parade took time to shine a light on the importance of voting and even held signs bearing political messages as they marched through the streets.

Among them, signs reading "Witches Vote" and "Scream if your rent is too damn high!"

Puppeteer Emily Czudak, who walked in the parade as a giant cat, says the event is the perfect time for families and individuals to escape anxieties.

"It’s something families can do together and, you know, cheer up during a time of unease," said Czudak.
