STORYLINE:
Children in Muwasi, a tent encampment outside Gaza’s southern city of Rafah, sang songs, danced and took part in other activities on Thursday following the launch of a new school initiative financed by an Omani education fund.
It marks the first school to have a full teaching staff and administration since Israel’s offensive in the Gaza Strip began after Hamas’ October 7 attacks led to the complete abandonment of the school year in Gaza.
The school program, created by the Wafaa Al-Muhsineen Charitable Foundation with support from the Omani Endowment Fund for Distance Education, seeks to address the devastation caused by the conflict to the Palestinian enclave’s education system, which was already struggling after several wars and escalations with Israel since 2008.
At least 1,800, children from first to fourth grade were expected to attend the first day of the initiative on Thursday.
Administrators said the turnout exceeded expectations "to the point that we are considering stopping registration due to capacity," according to teacher Nora Abu Mossa.
At least 625,000 children have been missing out on education in Gaza, according to U.N. agencies.
Schools have been shut since the war began in October last year.
The majority of schools have been used as shelters to house the many displaced families in Gaza, most of whom are living in unsanitary conditions due to the ongoing fighting in the enclave.
