STORYLINE:
China on Thursday upheld the UN General Assembly’s adoption of a resolution condemning the American economic embargo of Cuba for a 32nd year.
The vote on Wednesday in the 193-member world body was 187-2, with only the United States and Israel against the resolution, and one abstention.
It tied the record for support for the Caribbean nation first reached in 2019 and again last year.
At a daily news briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated China’s consistent opposition to the U.S. blockade against Cuba, which he said “added to the suffering” of the Cuban people.
“China will firmly stand on the side of international fairness and justice, continue to firmly support the Cuban people, oppose external interference and blockade, and safeguard sovereignty and national dignity,” said Lin.
General Assembly resolutions are not legally binding, but they reflect world opinion, and the vote has given Cuba an annual stage to demonstrate that the US stands apart in its decades-old efforts to isolate the Caribbean nation.
Separately, Lin commented on a reported prisoner swap with the US, in which American pastor David Lin was released recently after being detained in China for nearly 20 years in exchange for an unidentified Chinese national in US custody.
“China is a country under the rule of law and the competent Chinese authorities handle related matters in accordance with law,” Lin said but didn’t confirm the report or detail the case.
David Lin was given a life sentence by Chinese authorities in 2006 for what the US said was a bogus charge of contract fraud, according to media reports.
Lin also suggested the reporter check with the competent Chinese authorities for the ongoing investigation into the president of AstraZeneca China.
“The Chinese government welcomes foreign companies’ investment and operation in China and will protect their legitimate rights and interests according to law,” he added though.
The drug company said on Wednesday that President Leon Wang was cooperating with an investigation, without elaborating on Wang’s condition or whereabouts.
