"What we are seeing that the Israeli enemy through the aggression that it is carrying out especially on civilian areas and even shelters – including the recent attack on al-Wardaniya (village in Sibline) – is unfortunately leading to an increase in the number of displaced people coming (here). It’s possible that in this area alone, the number of displaced people might have exceeded 100,000."

6. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Firas Abiad, Lebanese caretaker Health Minister:
"Primary healthcare centers are acting as the health care sector’s first line of defense when it comes to the displaced. There are very large numbers (of people) who are either in shelters or elsewhere. We reach them (these displaced people) through mobile clinics, which are providing medicine and essential supplies. Of course, there are challenges. Of course there are some medications that have been requested in larger quantities, especially for serious illnesses. We are approaching winter and we might be seeing more cases of acute respiratory infections, diarrhea or other nutrition-related conditions. This is what the ministry is working on."

STORYLINE:
Lebanon’s caretaker health minister warned that Israeli attacks are forcing more people from their homes, raising concerns that the displaced may face increased health risks as winter approaches.

Firas Abiad made the remarks on Wednesday during a visit to Sibline Governmental Hospital in Mount Lebanon.

"The Israeli enemy through the aggression that it is carrying out especially on civilian areas and even shelters… is unfortunately leading to an increase in the number of displaced people coming (here)," Abiad said.

After nearly a year of low-level fighting, the Israeli military escalated its attacks against Hezbollah in Lebanon a month ago, launching daily aerial bombardments and a ground invasion.

Most of Lebanon’s estimated 1.2 million displaced people fled over the past month.

"We are approaching winter and we might be seeing more cases of acute respiratory infections, diarrhea or other nutrition-related conditions," Abiad said.

Abiad spoke with lawmaker Bilal Abdallah who leads the parliament’s health care committee and met with members of a crisis committee for Mount Lebanon during his visit to Sibline.

Israel has intensified bombardment of Lebanon since Sept. 23, vowing to cripple Hezbollah, which began firing into northern Israel after Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack triggered the war in Gaza.

Israel says it is targeting Hezbollah members and infrastructure and says the group places military assets in civilian areas.

Lebanon’s Heath Ministry said more than 2,790 people have been killed and 12,700 wounded since Oct. 8, 2023, when Hezbollah began firing rockets into Israel, drawing retaliation.

Israeli ground forces invaded southern Lebanon at the beginning of October.
