" I said last night, I had a dream, when I got to Africa I had one hell of a rumble, I had to beat Tarzan’s behind first for claiming to be the king of the jungle, for this fight I wrestled with alligators, I’ve tussled with the whale, I done handcuffed lightning and put thunder in jail, you know I’m bad, I have murdered a rock, I injured a stone and I hospitalised a brick, I’m so bad I make medicine sick, I’m so fast, man, I can run through a hurricane and don’t get wet, when George Foreman meets me he’ll pay his debt, I can drown a drink of water and kill a dead tree, wait ’til you see Muhammad Ali."

STORYLINE:
October 30 will mark fifty years since the “Rumble in the Jungle”, the name given to the epic fight between boxing legends Muhammad Ali and George Foreman, held in Kinshasa, the capital of what was then Zaire.

The fight was an upset for Foreman, and ended when Ali knocked him out in the eighth round of a 15-round bout, regaining the world heavyweight title.

A historic match in its own right, the fight left a lasting legacy on boxing in the Congo. And ahead of the anniversary, boxers from around the continent headed to Kinshasa as it was host to the 21st African Amateur Boxing Championships.

Landry Matete Kankonde, known as “Balo”, represented Congo in the men’s heavyweight class. He credits “Rumble in the Jungle” for putting Congo on the map in the world boxing scene.

“Celebrating the 50th anniversary for us is an honor. Fortunately it’s during this anniversary that the African championship happens here at home. It’s a way to celebrate that,” he said.

Kankonde lost to Senegal’s Karamba Kebe in the last fight of the finals.
