“Today is the first day that Tony will be seen underwater by the public for the first time. Here in our beautiful hippopotamus house at Berlin Zoo, there is a great opportunity to observe pygmy hippos and also the large hippos underwater. And that’s a completely different impression to what you’ve been able to experience in the outdoor enclosure so far. When you see how Tony moves almost weightlessly across the floor, how she pirouettes in the water and always pushes herself away from her mother and almost plays with her. It’s very enchanting.”

13. SOUNDBITE (German) Florian Sicks, Curator for Mammals at Berlin Zoo:
“Toni is now almost five months old. And she is developing splendidly, as expected for a pygmy hippopotamus. She has now increased her birth weight almost tenfold, or more than tenfold. She is even showing her first teeth. She is already eating a bit of hay and nibbling on the peanuts. Otherwise she is heavily dependent on her mother’s milk. But she is developing as we would expect for a pygmy hippopotamus, still resting a lot, but there are always some nice periods of activity where you can watch her romping around.”

16. SOUNDBITE (German) Florian Sicks, Curator for Mammals at Berlin Zoo:
“Debbie does the whole thing brilliantly. She’s already a very experienced mum. She had already raised three calves before Toni and knows exactly what to do. She’s always there when things could get a bit critical. For example, if Toni ventures into water that is too deep, she is there and offers to help them get back up because they can’t really swim, but rather float. So she has it fully under control. We don’t have to do anything. The most important thing is that we keep a low profile and leave them to themselves.”

STORYLINE:
A pygmy hippopotamus was seen swimming underwater by the public for the first time on Tuesday at Berlin Zoo.
Through a glass wall, the visitors were able to watch Toni and her fellow hippos in their enclosure.
The zoo’s Curator for Mammals Florian Sick said that visitors now had "a great opportunity to observe pygmy hippos and also the large hippos underwater."
Before Toni’s birth, her mother Debbie had raised three calves between 2004 and 2008.
Berlin Zoo first bred a pygmy hippopotamus in 1921.
